A manual gearbox uses parallel shafts and sliding collars. An automatic transmission uses a planetary gear arrangement because it packs several gear ratios into a small package and shifts under load without losing drive. The sun gear sits in the center. A ring gear circles it with teeth on the inner face. Between them, a planet carrier holds two, three, or four pinion gears.
