If the truck runs smooth at steady speed and only stumbles during tip-in, think about airflow meters, throttle control, dirty injectors, or a fuel delivery problem. Safety First and Tool Check Before You Start

The codes themselves are only the starting point. P0300 means random misfire, while P0301 through P0308 point to a specific cylinder. P0171 or P0174 means the engine is running lean on one or both banks. Those are not repair instructions, but they tell you where to focus.
Watch short-term and long-term fuel trims. If trims are high at idle and improve when rpm rises, that often hints at a vacuum leak. If trims stay high under load, fuel delivery moves up the list. If one cylinder has a higher misfire count than the others, that is where I start with a plug and coil swap test. On many late-model trucks, that beats throwing parts at all eight cylinders.
A scan tool can also show throttle position and mass air flow readings. If the throttle opening looks normal but airflow is low, a dirty MAF sensor or intake restriction may be involved. If the throttle stays steady and the engine still stumbles, the issue is deeper than driver input.

Fuel, air, and spark faults that cause a stumble
Start with the easy physical checks. A clogged air filter can seem too simple to matter, but it can choke a truck under load. A cracked intake boot or loose clamp can let unmetered air in and create a lean stumble. A dirty throttle body can make tip-in jerky, especially on electronic throttle systems.
If you clean the throttle body, use the correct cleaner and do not force the plate. If you remove the throttle body, clean the mating surface and reinstall it to the factory torque for your engine. Many light-duty applications land in the 7 to 9 lb-ft range, but the service data wins every time. Do not guess with small bolts.
Spark plugs and coils are the next big branch. A worn plug can fire fine at idle and break down when cylinder pressure rises. Coils can do the same. On many trucks, a plug set may run $40 to $120, while a coil can run $30 to $150 each. That is still cheaper than random guessing, but only if the test supports the replacement.
When the problem is not really the engine
Not every stumble is a classic misfire. If the rpm flares up but the truck does not pull harder, the transmission or torque converter may be slipping. If the truck hesitates and then shifts hard, that is a different branch of diagnosis. Some drivers also feel a shudder from the driveline, especially at certain speeds, and call it an engine problem when it is really in the transfer case, U-joints, or transmission fluid.
A bad fuel pump can also mimic ignition trouble. Many pumps get weak under load before they fail outright. You may see normal idle behavior and then a falloff on the road. A fuel-pressure test tells the truth faster than a parts-store guess. On some trucks, a weak pump or clogged filter can turn into a $700 to $1,500 repair if the tank has to come down, so it is worth testing before you commit.
If the truck has a flashing light, a strong fuel smell, or a stall that happens in traffic, stop driving it and get a proper diagnosis. That is the point where a $120 to $180 shop test can save you far more than it costs.

When to stop DIY and schedule a diagnosis
Stop at home if the basic checks do not give you a clear answer. A good line in the sand is this: if you have swapped the obvious maintenance parts, cleaned the intake path, and the symptom still returns on the same road test, you need deeper testing. Smoke testing for vacuum leaks, pressure testing the fuel system, and coil-pattern testing are where a pro earns the money.
